Ok, so it's Friday morning and I'm feeling a lot better about last night's game. Screw it. Time to move on. Now I just read a feature on Chip Kelly's practices. The stuff is pretty crazy. Apparently he has every single drill in practice filmed (yes that includes position warm-ups). He also has defensive assistants wear shoulder pads with huge wings attached. Apparently, the wings simulate the exact height on a 6'4'' d-lineman and makes it harder for the QB to pass. Throughout practices, loud music blares to simulate the noisiness of a real game. And for cafeteria food, Kelly has replaced unhealthy, fatty foods with clean, healthy foods. The smoothies and shakes are now a staple in the Eagles cafeteria.
All of this stuff paints Chip Kelly as an eccentric man. Wings on pads? Music? But when you actually think about it, these ideas are genius. Well, let me clarify. It's not like Kelly's ideas are literally "genius". It's just that he's one of the first coaches (maybe the first) to actually implement all these crazy things into practice. And to be honest, it makes me wonder why more coaches don't do this kind of stuff. Logically-speaking, practice is meant to help the players prepare for games. So during practice, you should simulate game-like conditions right? It seems as if Kelly's ideas aren't only smart, they should be the NORM. Sure, the loud music may be too much for some coaches. Many coaches would prefer to have a quiet setting while they explain difficult plays to new players. The music may be a distraction. But the other ideas all seem fairly logical. Why not have huge "flyswatters" obstruct the QB's vision? In real games, Vick isn't going to have an open throwing lane, especially considering he's barely 6'1'' (if that). Also, why wouldn't NFL teams start replacing their unhealthy foods with healthy foods? I understand that these guys need to maintain weight, but there are healthy ways to do that. By cutting out the fatty stuff, the players may be in better shape and have higher energy levels during games. In my opinion, Chip Kelly is mostly doing stuff that should have been done a long time ago. While we can't deem him a good coach until the season actually starts, it is evident that he is confident in his ways.
